Eugene S. Craven of Brunswick, Ga., passed away peacefully at home under the care of Heartland Hospice on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, after a short illness. He was known as Gene to his friends.
Born in Jesup, he lived in Baxley, Ga., until his high school years. He was the oldest of five children. Gene graduated from Glynn Academy in 1966, later joined the Army and had a tour in Vietnam. While he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, he met the love of his life, Janette Stimnel, to whom he was married for 33 years. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, Texas, where he received a Certificate of Ordination in 1990. After the passing of his wife, he moved back to Brunswick, where he called home.
He met his second love in Brunswick, Ga. Gene and Carolyn were married in 2007. Gene was active in his community, stirring the pot with his family and friends. He loved riding his trike and playing his drums. He was a member of the River Rats, Elks Lodge and Golden Isles Shag Club. He was the VFW Commander for year 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Clyde Lott Craven; his first wife, Jeanette Craven; and his brother, Dwain Craven.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Craven; daughter, Amy Michelle Chamberlin (Alan); son, Jeremy Craven of Texas; stepchildren, Melissa Garrason (David) and Michael Hall of Ludowici; five grandchildren, Trinity Craven, Charlie Chamberlin, Jessica Garrason, and Kailyn and Parker Hall; sisters, Deborah Summerall (Darrell), Sharline Craven (Robbie), and Samantha Morris (Keith); and several nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and aunts.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, with the Rev. Buzz Yarbrough officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with his family.
