William O. Johnson


William "Bill" Oscar Johnson, 85, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 2, 2014, with his wife and family by his side. Bill was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Raymond, WA. He was the second child of Adeline and Oscar Johnson.

In 1946, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy and served with the Occupation Troops in South East Asia for the duration of World War II. He was honorably discharged and re-enlisted in the Navy again in 1950. During the issuance of his uniform he met a "really cute" wave named Arleta. She became the love of his life for the next 63 years. After leaving the Navy, Bill became interested in the newspaper profession. He worked for various newspapers as a printer including the Portland Oregonian, the Portland Reporter, and The Salinas Californian.

Bill was a member of Madonna del Sasso Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614, American Legion Post 31, Sons in Retirement, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed spending time with his family, pitching horseshoes, playing golf, taking trips to Reno, going to the horse races, and telling his jokes, and stories.

Bill is survived by his wife, Arleta; his sister, Betty Pobjoy of Northridge; his daughter, Glenda (Fermin) Moreno of Salinas; his sons, Wes Johnson of Reno, NV, and Wayne (Tari) Johnson of Salinas. Bill is also survived by his nephews, Steve (Patti) Pobjoy of Northridge and David (Jillene) Pobjoy of Canyon Country; as well as his grandchildren, Chrystal (Tony), Andrea (Marco), Julie (Scott), Jenny (Josh),TIffany, Katella (Nelson), Amanda (Peter), Kenny, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, with an Evening Prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905.

A Chapel Blessing will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Healey Mortuary Chapel, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905.

Burial with full Military Honors will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901.
