Burton DeWayne Calkins Aug. 4, 1928 Nov. 30, 2018 Longtime local resident Burton D. Calkins, 90, of Longview passed away Nov. 30, 2018, at the Hospice Care Center. He was born Aug. 4, 1928, in Shelton, Wash., to Leroy "Rusty" and Ruth (Cox) Calkins. After graduating from high school Burton served in the Army Air Force as a pilot and radio operator. He moved to the local area in 1949 and completed the IBEW Apprenticeship Program. On April 25, 1952, Burton married Uiva Mae McFadden in Kelso. She survives him at home after 66 years of marriage. Burton was a shift electrician at Reynolds Metals Company for 43 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the IBEW Union and loved attending their apprenticeship graduation dinners. He could fix anything electrical. Burton was also known as Ham Radio Operator K7WJJ and enjoyed talking to people world-wide. He was easy-going and enjoyed helping others, animals and traveling. In addition to his beloved wife Uiva Calkins, Burton is survived by two sons, Paul Calkins (Marilyn) of Fresno, Calif., and Jeff Calkins of Tacoma; a daughter, Heather Phillips of Longview; a grandson, Sheldon Calkins of Salem, Ore.; a great-grandson, Michael Calkins of Salem; and two brothers, John in Aurora, Ore., and Jessie in White Salmon, Wash. Burton was preceded in death by three brothers, Bob, Tommy and Ray; and five sisters, Patty, Nellie, Blanche, Bernice and JoAnn. At his request, no service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.
