My "Favorite Uncle" John - a hard worker, gentleman, great conversationalist, had a quick smile for me and always let me know while visiting his garden that I could have a starter plant of anything I wanted. Now, these plants are even more special to me. We both loved and missed my mom, his sister, very much and that brought us closer. He'd call to ask how I was doing or to tell me to stop and visit him and Aunt Avis anytime and I did. We had great conversations. We could talk politics, the housing market or sports. He always asked about my children, told me every year when to start and stop fertilizing my plants and the best hour of the day to come and admire his day lilies. He told me his favorite ice cream-French Vanilla after I brought him mine-Philly Vanilla. He shared that he didnt particlarly like my corn souffle but loved my veal and peppers. I'll miss our visits on the phone and in person, him offering me a glass of root beer or 1/2 grape juice 1/2 ginger ale or that cold glass of lemonade and his recent sharing of "Jinny tidbits"- stories about my mom that I'd never heard before. I realized today, I'll miss everything about John Randall- but mostly how he made me feel that I was special to him. Your Niece Denise

I am so sorry for our loss. John was my mentor at HADS and it has been an honor knowing him. I will miss him and his directions terribly. We shared the love of red daylilies. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Avis, I am deeply sorrowed by John's passing. I worked with John closely over the span from 1972 to 1999. He was a stout supporter of our research work, a good friend and we inspired each other to truly make a difference in a difficult environment.

John W. Randall was my father-in-law for the past 8+ years. I enjoyed the times we would watch the NY Giants (and commiserate) together, our barbecues, his and Avis' amazing Daylily gardens, but mostly, I just enjoyed his overflowing love of his family, life and everything about it. I am honored to be his son-in-law and a member of his extended family. I only wish we could have had more time and made it to Florida together! I will miss him very much! With much love---

I'll always remember how my Aunt Beatrice would rave about her son-in-law, John. "He's such a kind and decent man", she would say, and how right she was. Even the lilies will miss his tender care.

I had the pleasure of taking care of Mr. Randall several times. Anyone who met him instantly loved him. I'm sure he will be very missed.
