GILLILAND Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Henrietta Lewis Gilliland, Hinkey, died Sunday, February 24, 2013. Hinkey was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 29, 1913. After graduating from the Ward-Belmont Preparatory School, she attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. On June 6, 1935, she married Robertson Hendon Gilliland, Rod. During their early years of marriage, while living in Nashville, Hinkey served on the Junior League. She and Rod then moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida, where she was one of the founders of Christ Episcopal Church. They then settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where Hinkey was a member of the Colonial Dames, the Florida Yacht Club, and the Timuquana Country Club, and a longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In 1973, she and Rod retired to Amelia Island, Florida. Hinkey is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Rod; her children, Elizabeth and Robertson; her two sisters, Edna Moody and Gertrude McCall; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verner Moore Lewis. She is survived by her son, Edwin; her daughter-in-law, Caroline Gilliland Theus; grandchildren Elizabeth (Temple) Fennell, Jonathan (Jennifer) Gilliland, and Robertson (Emily) Gilliland; and her great-grandchildren, Beck and Keller Gilliland and Dosia, Clara, and Frances Fennell. Throughout her 99 years, Hinkey possessed an incisive sense of humor steeped in old-fashioned southern charm. She was also a stalwart friend and the life of the party. A memorial will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra at 10 a.m. on March 1.
