PIEL, PHILIP JOHN March 18, 1942 to May 22, 2010 Phil passed away at his home in Escondido after a brief battle with cancer. Phil believed in two basic ideas, if you're going to do it, do it right and do the right thing, especially when nobody is looking. Known for his generosity and sense of humor Phil enjoyed life and was loved and admired by those who knew him. He believed in working hard and enjoying the results of his labor and had the ability to talk to you instead of at you. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband and father who led by example. Phil also believed that golf lessons were a waste of time and the answer to a missed putt was buying a new putter. He firmly believed there wasn't a shelf life on a joke, that they just get funnier especially after thirty or forty times. Phil's professional career over the last 45 years was spent in the insurance field. He was instrumental and considered an expert in creating programs for contractors. Along with his partner, Patrick Flynn Phil, co-owned West Coast Group Benefits. His industry knowledge along with his ethics made him a person you'd want to be associated with. Phil was preceded in death by his parents Philip and Eileen, his second wife Mary and son Lee. His memory will live on through his wife Agnes, son Philip and daughter-in-law Marie, daughters Cathy and son-in-law Craig Neeley, and Patty, brothers Leo and sister-in-law Ruth Ann, and Ricky; grandchildren Katie, Nick and Jordan; nephews Kyle and Gabriel and countless friends and relatives. A viewing will be held at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025 on Thursday, May 27, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held the next day at 12 p.m. at the Church of The Resurrection, 1445 Conway Dr., Escondido, CA 92027, with a graveside service after at San Marcos Cemetery, 1021 Mulberry Dr., San Marcos, CA 92069.

As We Look Back
by Unknown Author

As we look back over time
We find ourselves wondering .....
Did we remember to thank you enough
For all you have done for us?
For all the times you were by our sides
To help and support us .....
To celebrate our successes
To understand our problems
And accept our defeats?
Or for teaching us by your example,
The value of hard work, good judgment,
Courage and integrity?
We wonder if we ever thanked you
For the sacrifices you made.
To let us have the very best?
And for the simple things
Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?
If we have forgotten to show our
Gratitude enough for all the things you did,
We're thanking you now.
And we are hoping you knew all along,
How much you meant to us.

Phil loved many things. He was an avid golfer. He traveled to many beautiful golf courses such and Bandon Dunes in Oregon, the Homestead in Virginia and Princeville in Kauai.
He enjoyed watching Football, Basketball, Boxing and Baseball to name a few.
Phil loved kids. He enjoyed his routines with his Grand Children and Nephews, Sunday morning haircuts, getting the car washed and going to the latest Disney movie. Sometime you wondered whether Phil was taking them to the movies, or just bringing them along so he had an excuse to see the movie. Phil never seemed happier then when he had his family and friends around him. His love for his children was apparent and a joy for him to be with, as well he loved sharing many wonderful experiences with them whenever possible. Phil always enjoyed his adventures with Agnes, his wife, and their friends in traveling and enjoying the world’s delights.
There was never a place too far or an adventure to difficult for Phil. He lived to experience and enjoyed all of life’s treasures.
He was one of the most consistent men in a world of inconsistency and he never backed away from a challenge. Phil was a husband, a father, a mentor and a friend to so many.
He will be missed and was one of the great personalities of this world. And to his life one can only use his words to say…“Good Enough”

Rick,

thanks so much for your thoughtfulness....the tribute you made to Phil is apt and outstanding. i spent 12 years of my life with Phil...the moment I met him in february of 1998, my life was changed forever. He took me to Peohe's in Coronado for our first dinner date...there was a 40-minute wait so we shared a bottle of pinot noir and it became far too comfortable....for dinner, he chose a variety of appetizers starting with the delectable Lobster Bisque...with the evil sherry! on to their signature crunchy coconut shrimp and finally, an exotic serving of Ahi Poke and we shared an order of bread pudding with whisky sauce for dessert. Then, we went to the bar of the Hotel Del to have a nightcap of Remy Martin and boy did we dance to the dazzling music of their band!

I can go on and on with stories about Phil but what I want to say is that I am honored to have been an important part of his life. I never knew the true meaning of our marriage vows and unconditional love until he he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma. I will love Phil forever and all the memories I have of him will remain precious and sacred to me. I thank him for his generosity especially to some members of my family. I thank him for rescuing Kyle and Gabriel from a pitiful circumstance and a dark future.

I LOVE YOU PHIL.....Agnes

It was such a joy and an honor to know Phil. He was such a wise man and I learned so much from him. He was funny and such a great story teller. My prayer is that he is resting comfortably in heaven, telling stories and making the angels laugh! You are one of a kind Phil and I will miss you.

Despite not being a contractor, Phil served a pivitol part in the construction industry for many years. Although I only met Phil a few times, we always could find something to talk about. He was just one of the good guys. He will be missed.

Cathy,
I never had the opportunity to meet your Father but I feel like I know him from all the stories I've heard you tell. I do know he was loved by many and will be missed. I now have a better understanding where your humor probably came from. Love you dearly!

I first met Phil while going to high school with his daughter Cathy. I remember having dinner at their house and we would all be sitting around the table and laughing. Phil would throw out these one line jokes that would make you stop and think but then fall out laughing. He was one of the most loving, patient and kind people that I have had the pleasure of knowing. He will be missed greatly. My love and prayers go out to my second family.......you know who you are.

Philip, Marie, Agnes, Kathy, Patty, Christa and the rest of the family,

Phil was one of our dearest friends. We totally concur with Rita Ryder. Phil was truly one of the "good guys" and we hope there are really good restaurants where he is. It is hard to believe that he will not be there for a ball game or golf game or the other activities he loved. We miss him terribly. Joe and Sally Pizzo
