Norman Hawkins Obituary

Norman Hawkins passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013, after a valiant 35-year struggle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

Norman was born in Camden, N.J., on November 11, 1935. He was a faithful member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived his early years on the east coast, and moved with his parents to California. He met his future wife, Yvonne, at Chico High School, and they became high school sweethearts. Norman and Yvonne were married on June 11, 1957, at the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Norman served faithfully in several positions in the church, including over 15 years as a ward clerk. In 2003, Norman and Yvonne served as humanitarian missionaries in Vladivostok, Russia, for a period of 18 months. Norman earned a masters degree in Psychology. He taught grade school; worked with autistic and mentally impaired patients for over 20 years at the former Camarillo State Hospital; taught special education at Camarillo High School for over 10 years; and taught at Somis Academy for the past several years.

He spent his entire career helping those who struggled with learning disabilities. For the past several years, Norman participated in several patient-trial studies with various universities and government agencies experimenting with drugs designed to cure prostate cancer. Some of these drugs have been approved by the FDA and are now being used to save lives. One of his main goals in life was to assist in finding a cure for cancer.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, John Norman, and his granddaughter, Lilith Ann. He is survived by his sister, Maurine Koch; his loving wife of 55 years, Yvonne, and his four sons: Duane (Beth), Karl, Doug (Liz), and Kevin (Cari). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Christopher, Benjamin, Trevor, Joshua, Sienna, Zachary, Keegan, Adele, Amber, Madison, Liam, and Michael.

He was a resident of Camarillo for over 45 years.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1201 Paseo Camarillo, Camarillo, Calif. The viewing will be at 9:30 a.m. and the funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be immediately following at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Griffin Family Funeral Chapel, 1075 E. Daily Drive, Camarillo, Calif., 93010, 482-1166.
