DAVID KARR GRINWIS  
Formerly of Washington, DC, died on July 5, 2017 at Rivermead Continuing Care Community in Peterborough, NH following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 87. Born in Orange, New Jersey and brought up in Maplewood, he was the beloved son of Dr. Tyce Grinwis and Marion Karr Grinwis. After graduating from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York in 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corps in Ethiopia, which inspired him to seek work with the U.S. government abroad. He joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1959 and served with distinction in Washington, the former Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Algeria and Israel. His experiences and those of four others at the American Consulate in Stanleyville in 1964 are the subject of Captive in the Congo by Michael J. Hoyt. He is a member of the class of 1975 at the former National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington DC, former member of Christ Church Georgetown and the Diplomatic and Consular Officers', Retired (DACOR) in Washington. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jane MacAskill Grinwis of Peterborough; two children, James Grinwis of Greenfield, Mass and Emmy Grinwis of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; sister Carol Bitar of Chatham NJ, and brother Paul Grinwis of Kennett Square, PA.  A memorial service will be held on July 18 at All Saints' Church, Peterborough, and burial will take place later this year in Patterson, New Jersey.
