Niles Johnson Obituary

Johnson, Niles R., MD

Niles R. Johnson passed away unexpectedly on August 29, 2017 in New Mexico.

He was born on April 2, 1976 in Los Angeles, CA. His dreams of becoming a doctor led him to the Keck USC School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA where he graduated in 2005. He then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to do his residency in Internal Medicine. He remained in New Mexico for the rest of his life.

During all of his schooling Niles continued to follow his passion for the outdoors and snowboarding. He was sponsored by numerous snowboard companies and competed in Big Air and Border Cross contests whenever he could. He climbed many peaks in California and camped often with friends. He even made it as far as Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with his mother and sister in 2001.

Niles' adventures continued with his son Aysa and daughter Liilu. He taught them to ski, bike, climb, swim and how to camp. He took 1,000s of photos of them many of which fill all the rooms in his house. His love for them was endless and his passion for showing them the world was his true joy in life.

Niles is survived by his mother Jung-Sook Johnson; father Nils R. Johnson; sister Sonia Johnson (and Mike Snyder); son Aysa Johnson & daughter Liilu Johnson; and nephew Mikko Johnson. In addition to his family, he is survived by his girlfriend Melissa Chandler and ex-wife, Alex Johnson.

Today is Niles one year anniversary. I would just like to take a moment and reflect upon his kindness and love for family, and all people; especially those in need. I presume this is what helped to motivate him to seek higher education, and graduate from medical school. I never knew Niles personally. I only know him indirectly through his family and the people who loved him. By all accounts, he was a special human being; and a person who went out of his way to help others. I have his parents and sister's contact information, but it is not with me today. Maybe they will see this sometime and know that Niles is well remembered and that his life is honored.

May be Rest in Peace, and the Eternal Light Shine Upon him. My profound Blessings for ALL of you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Those of us, who remember Niles from his time in residency at UNM, remember a bright energetic and passionate young physician. I have never forgotten him and have thought of him over the years with fondness. He lives on on in our memories.
