Cathren Harris Obituary

Cathren Harris

Cathren Harris passed away February 9, 2018 after an AMAZING 103 years. Covering such a full life is difficult (singing, acting, flute, music, learning, writing, lecturing, and volunteering). Cathren was born November 4, 1914 in West Mineral Kansas on Election Day when Woodrow Wilson was President. Her Dad worked in the coal mines in Kansas since he was six and when World War One started they moved to Brea, California where her Dad worked in the oil fields. When the war was over they moved back to West Mineral. Cathren said they moved around frequently with her Dad looking for work. In 1927 many of her family began moving to Farmington, New Mexico, including Cathren. After that, she always considered New Mexico home. Cathren graduated top of her high school class. Cathren married in 1934 and moved to the oil fields of Louisiana where she had many adventures and worked very hard to save $10,000. The day World War II was over, they returned to Farmington, using that money to become co-owners of the Avery Hotel in Farmington. This is also where her love and interest in the Southwest American Indians became so important to her. Cathren moved to Albuquerque in 1951 and lived the remainder of her life here. She was active in many organizations. Cathren and her daughter Mary Cathren started a business in l974 called The Turquoise Lady of Old Town. They continued in business together for 27 years, retiring in 2002. Cathren was 88.

Her proudest accomplishments were lecturing for over 25 years all over the Southwest about the American Indians in the area and publishing two books, Never Kill a Song and Poetry of a Lifetime. Cathren was a beautiful poet and brought tears to many eyes with her readings.

Cathren is survived by her daughter, Mary Cathren and son-in-law, Tom Barger; also nieces and nephews, Greg and Monna Doak, Kent and Betty Doak, Gary and Susan Doak, Mike and Nancy Gibson, Douglas Gibson, and Bill and Janice Schnorr. Cathren was preceded in death by her husband, Jay J. Harris; parents, Nina and Charles Schnorr; sisters, Florence Gibson, Betty Nell Doak; and brother, Rolla Schnorr. Daisy and Titan say "Goodbye Grandma. We will miss you!"

Cathren's Life Celebration will be Saturday, March 3, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas with a reception afterward. Cathren's passionate cause was Doggie Rescue groups. Please visit our online guestbook for Cathren at

Mary Cathren, I have tried for several years to find an address for you and your mom but couldn't. I have been thinking of her a lot lately so thought I'd try a search again on google. I'm so sad and sorry for your loss. Wow! What a life she lived. Chuck and I built a home in Taos in 2000 and moved there full time in 2004. We had to return to Ohio for family reasons, but still miss the Taos years and go back now and then. I always loved my time spent in your shop talking with you and Cathren. What a wonderful treat getting to know you both. I still have all the pieces I purchased from you and treasure them. If you get a chance to email me, I would very much enjoy hearing from you. My email is [email protected]. Take good care. Ali Haas
