John Carroll Pollak
Long-time resident of Santa Fe John Carroll Pollak died peacefully at home on March 2, 2018, with his nearest kin at his side. Born in Detroit and raised in the upper peninsula of Michigan, during the Viet Nam War John served with the U.S. Marines, seeing action in the Tet Offensive. Upon discharge, John met and soon married Nancy Soward of West Covina, California. They shortly moved to Santa Fe. Acquiring a BA in Philosophy and English from UNM and an MA in Liberal Arts from St John's College, he remained a man devoted to thought and letters throughout his life. An active member of the community, he was for many years President of the Santa Fe chapter of the St. John's College Alumni Association, while also an avid runner active with the Santa Fe Striders. A lover of music and a fine cook, he will be remembered for his quick wit, insightful observations at the seminar table, and devotion to his family and friends. Preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Nancy, and his parents, John and Juanita, John is survived by his son, Justin and his brother, Paul.

I still think of John often, because he was so dear to me. He and I often co-hosted the SJC alumni at my home. I wouldn't have tried it without him, he was such a gracious and supportive co-host. He greeted all of the newcomers as they arrived, leaving me free to busy around the kitchen and get waters for folks as they arrived. Sometimes afterwards, we and his GI friends would be there all night continuing the conversation. It was not a lifelong conversation, but it was a thirty year conversation. He was a best friend to me, and I particularly loved his scholarship.

We just read about our friend's death and we feel a tremendous loss. We made friends with John in 2013 and he credits us with "saving his life" because of a failed relationship and he was "down in his cups". John sat at our table at The Cowgirl for several years and we became friends. He was a gentle and loving and very special man.

Know this: John was a good man -- intelligent indeed, a raconteur, and an engaged spirit. Because he imprinted upon souls, he lives.
