Palladino, Robert J., Fr.
Fr. Robert J. Palladino, 83, of Sandy , Oregon, died suddenly at his home on February 26, 2016.
Fr. Palladino was born and raised in Albuquerque and entered the Trappist Monastery at Pecos shortly after graduation from St. Mary High in 1950. He remained a monk until the late 60's, by which time the monastery had relocated to Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Halverson Palladino; his parents, Michael and Armida Palladino; brothers Horace, John and Michael; sisters Lorraine and Armida Palladino, Anita Carter and Florence Pavioni.
He is survived by his son, Eric, of Sandy, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11:00 on Friday, March 11, 2016 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Portland, OR.

I only found out recently of the passing of RJ Palladino. I met him and was inspired by him when I was a Reed student in his Calligraphy class over 40 years ago. He had a way about him, a peacefulness, an inner joy, a wise soul that I never forgot. I am so thankful that I sleuthed an address for him and wrote to him in the Fall of 2014. I told him what an impact he had had on me so many years ago. And he wrote back to me with genuine surprise and pleasure. Such humility! I had so hoped to visit him and I think I hoped he would live forever. He will live in my heart always. With so much gratitude for knowing you, rest in peace RJP, melissa finch

Eric and family, I met your father when he ministered to my mother in her last days. His compassion, guidance, and kindness were invaluable to our family in this time of sorrow. I know that he is in heaven conversing with all those who preceded him. My friendship with him was only beginning and I will miss our conversations. Thank you for sharing him with us. Irene Montgomery, Salem (along with my family, my sisters, and their families)

Heartbroken with the news of the sudden passing of my mentor, colleague and dear friend of over 40 years, Father Robert Palladino. I'm so grateful that the last few years we met annually on his visits to New Mexico, to share an Italian meal and a good glass of wine, and even more grateful that I had a full day with him last year, visiting the NM monastery where he was a cloistered monk for almost 20 years. It was a radiant day and we shared it well.
Robert always spoke so lovingly of his family in Albuquerque and other cities, and though I haven't met you, Eric, I hope you receive this and my deepest condolences for the loss of both of your parents too young. Please let me know if I can do anything to help you from NM.
One thing that isn't mentioned in the NY Times article last week http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/06/arts/design/rev-robert-palladino-83-scribe-who-shaped-apples-fonts.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0
was that he had wonderful times in Italy, his dream, and was able to say Mass at some of the oldest cathedrals there - I was so pleased by how much he was able to enjoy Italy, after years teaching at Reed and thinking he would never have the resources to get there.
I don't think you would like this photo of you, so I'm going to try and post another here. RIP RJP, I miss all of the Italian food, wine and endless conversation that we were supposed to share into the future. You were and will always be my most beloved teacher.

Father Robert brought delightful, surprising music to services at St. John's in Welches. As I got to know him, I appreciated his depth of knowledge in all the arts and in history. I will always treasure his humility, generosity, kindness, gentleness and wit. The integrity with which he lived his life is inspiring. Pope Francis would certainly honor him if he knew Fr. Robert's story. Thank-you, dear Sir, for having graced us with your Self.

Eric and other family - May God give you Peace & Comfort at this time. You father will always be in our hearts and in our home, as we have a very special tie to him. He married my husband and me twenty years ago this August and was a dear friend to a family member. we have several pieces of his art, that we cherish, including our marriage certificate. We will miss his joyous and peaceful soul here on earth, but God, the angles and saints will enjoy it in heaven!!

I join with many in mourning the loss of Fr. Palladino. It was providence that I attended some of his final Masses here at St. John's in Welches this past January and February. Fr. Palladino exemplified my communication with the church. His homilies were never long but always memorable. He was adept on drawing a historical perspective that resonated. I will never forget how happy and grateful he was when I gave him a bottle of red wine from Galilee (for Holy Communion of course!) He drew upon the richness of his own life's experiences and walked humbly with the Lord. God keep you always Father Palladino. Your very presence shed God's light on my soul. In so many ways, you, along with Pope Francis, are what disciples of Christ should be and your presence will be with me always.

Father Palladino,
Thank you for your guidance and love. I can't believe you are gone. You have made me a better catholic and a better person. From high school to preparing for conformation and years later officiating at my wedding to my wonderful husband Patrick. You were at probably at every major event in my life. I could always rely on your steady and comforting advice. I will miss you as a beloved friend and as someone whom I looked to as a second grandfather. God bless. Be at peace. Love,

Fr. Palladino was a magnificent calligrapher, who graced our school in the 80s as an artist in residence. I was enthralled by his art classes the I was lucky enough to take, and my students were equally mesmerized by his calligraphic instruction. A grateful former student, EMJ
