July 6, 2016

Alfred E. Garcia, 91, resident of Albuquerque, NM.

Two days after celebrating his 4th of July Birthday with family, friends, fireworks, Mariachis, and a shot of Tequila, Alfred Garcia passed away reluctantly.

Alfred was born in Raton, NM. He attended St. Patrick's Academy in Raton. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was at the Port Chicago Disaster on July 17, 1944. After leaving the Navy he attended St. Michaels College in Santa Fe, and UNM in Albuquerque. He became an IRS Agent and Instructor in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. As the story goes, he met Rose Mae Lowe on a street corner during the Santa Fe Fiestas. They married on April 19, 1952 in Santa Fe, NM and together had five children. He loved to go to the gym and spend hours on the golf course with friends. Alfred was an avid artist and loved painting in his studio. One of his favorite things to paint was the Taos Pueblo. He loved his Ranchito and at one time raised animals and the hottest green chile in Alameda. Alfred loved to play guitar with his two grandsons, Alex and Clinton. He also played guitar and sang at the North Valley Senior Center. He was known as Papa and was loved dearly by all his grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents Alfredo and Juanita Garcia, his sister Celia Sanchez, brother Alfonso Garcia, & grandson Michael Garcia.

Alfred is survived by his wife Rose Mae Garcia; children Ernest Garcia (Linda), Elaine McMahon (Kevin), James Garcia (Sue), Anita Justus (Eddie) and Alfred Garcia (Richare); grandchildren Amanda Hunter (Greg), Matthew Garcia, Eric McMahon (Sora), Chris Garcia (Andrea), Dominic Garcia, Andrew Garcia (Elizabeth), Alex McMahon, Brittany Garcia, Clinton Justus, Marlowe Justus, Noah Garcia; great-grandchildren Kennedy Hunter, Owen Garcia and Chloe Hunter; sisters-in-law Lita Garcia and Maryanne Lowe; and nieces and nephews.

The family of Alfred Garcia wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Morning Star Assisted Living and to Ashley and Alex with Amber Care Hospice.

A limb has fallen from the family tree that says, grieve not for me, remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived while I was strong. We love you Alfred, Dad, Papa and will always hold you in our hearts.

Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 am on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 9502 4th St. NW. Please join the family for a reception immediately following in the Parish Hall. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Alfred Garcia's name be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
