Allan F. Wackerbarth Obituary
Wackerbarth, Allan F.

Allan F. Wackerbarth, born on 1/12/1925, in Morenci, AZ, and died on 4/18/2016, in Bellingham, WA.

Al's greatest pride was his service to his country in WWII. Drafted out of high school, he started his naval career in San Diego at boot camp, after which he volunteered for Submarine Service. He trained in New London, CT on an old WWI sub before being assigned to the USS Blueback. Al's boat operated in the South Pacific, Coral Sea and Java Sea. The Blueback was strafed in a sneak attack and lost one sailor. Soon after it was hit again but there was no loss of life. At one point, the Blueback rescued four Army Air Force flyers from a downed B-24.

On January 1, 1946, Al became a civilian again and returned to Albuquerque, NM where he had been living prior to the war. He married and had three children. In 1993 he moved to Bellingham, WA. Al was a long time member of the Bell-Air R/C Flyers. He was well known for his model building skills and flew R/C airplanes until he was 89. One of the first to volunteer to make needed repairs, mow the field, and cook hot dogs, Al spent countless hours supporting the hobby he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his son John, brother Sam, and sisters Eleanor Schultz, Lyda Butler and Helen Mayne, and by his parents, Bura and Henry Wackerbarth.

He is survived by his brother Ernie; daughter Leslie Krohn; son Steve and his wife Ruby; and three grandsons, Dirk Krohn, John Allan Wackerbarth and his wife Jennifer, and Kevin Wackerbarth. He has two great- granddaughters, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

A private service will be held at a later time, with the immediate family attending.

The family wishes to express a special Thank-you to all his buddies in Bellingham for their friendship & kindness to Allan.
