Alma Daniels Obituary
Daniels, Alma Sturges

Alma Sturges Daniels, Descendent of early west Texas pioneers, Alma Lou Sturges Daniels died near midnight on November 17th, 2016 and went to her rest with the same grace as she lived her life. The Lord is her shepherd.

Alma's maternal grandparents came west by covered wagon and settled in Yoakum County, Texas where her grandmother was only the third Anglo woman in the county. Her paternal grandfather joined the Civil War at age 16 and, never returning home, raised his family in Texas after the war. Their children, Frank Sturges and Minnie Hurst married in 1914.

Their first three children were born on ranches and they looked forward to having their fourth child, Alma, in the new West Texas hospital in Lubbock. Grandmother Hurst was so worried that they would "mix up the babies" that Mama was born to Frank L and Minnie Sturges on March 30, 1924 at the grandparent's house on Avenue Q in Lubbock.

Alma had two sisters, Margaret and Mary Gene and three brothers Fritz, Frank and Bozo, all of whom preceded her.

Moving west in 1929, the Sturges family bought a farm in southern Santa Fe county and also opened a cafe in Estancia which included one of the first post prohibition liquor licenses in New Mexico. They lived as respected farmers, ranchers, merchants and friends.

Alma returned to Lubbock for high school followed by college at Texas Tech where she met a Veteran of good character and married Cecil W. Daniels on July 2, 1949. They enjoyed life together and had four children. Though Cecil died in 1983, Alma watched the family grow and was known henceforth simply as Grami to all.

Surviving family are: Daughter Janna and Bob Wooley family, granddaughter Brittani and husband Jerrod (Sydne and Adyson) grandson Ryan and wife Emily (great grandchildren) (Levi and Soren) Son Mark and Kate Daniels family, grandson Travis and wife Amy (Chandler and Courtney) Son Paul and Jo Daniels family, granddaughter Erin and husband Tanner (Olivia, Nathan and James), granddaughter Lauren and husband Addison (Chloe), granddaughter Paige and granddaughter Faith and husband Tavish. Son John Daniels and grandson Zacharias and granddaughter Jordan.

Alma's extended family is very large and many friends are like family all of whom are remembered with love and gratitude by her children. These far reaching associations all connected through Grami. It was she that we all came to. She was our still water and our comfort with her goodness and mercy in the name of the Lord.

Alma held a Bachelor of Arts degree in foreign language with a government minor and later added a Master's degree in Library Science. Her 31 year education career was culminated by 23 years as librarian at Sierra Middle School in Roswell.

She decided not to retire from life and instead took up administrative concerns for her son Mark as he developed his business. As the company matriarch, of sorts, Mama immensely enjoyed being an active and integral part of the company and participated with the office as recently as last week. She was Grami to all.

Alma had wonderful long term associations with many groups including the Order of Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the 1941 Book Club, P.E.O Chapter A I, Chaves County Republican Women and as a founding member of the first Beta Sigma Phi chapter in Lubbock. Alma also enjoyed many travels with family and friends. She and Cecil very much enjoyed exposing the family to many diverse destinations.

A thoughtful, compassionate, humble and giving person. An anonymous quote from a plate on her wall says;

My house is small, no mansion for a millionaire...but there is room for love and there is room for friends. That's all I care.

Surely her cup runneth over and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

A memorial service to celebrate Alma's lovely life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church located at Third and Kentucky in Roswell, NM at 2 PM on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, Alma requested that donations are made to any of the following. The Menaul School at 301 Menaul Blvd. NE in Albuquerque, NM 87107. P.E.O Chapter AI at 3856 East Pine Lodge Road, Roswell, NM 88201. Or, the library or .
