Aurora Sanchez Obituary
Sanchez, Aurora Maria

Aurora Maria Sanchez died from complications of Alzheimer's disease on April 25, 2016 in San Francisco, California.

Born 1925 in Winslow Arizona, she was a Harvey Girl, and during WWII, joined the war effort, working as a welder in the Long Beach, CA shipyards. She was a Union activist throughout her work life, and a staunch feminist, long before the movement took shape and was given a name. But it was not until retiring and moving to Santa Fe, that she truly came into her own.

For many years, she made and sold pottery in California. In Santa Fe, her work evolved dramatically, she began creating beautifully crafted utilitarian stoneware and native micaceous clay pottery. She exhibited at venues throughout New Mexico, and was among the first potters to be accepted as an exhibitor at Spanish Market. Her pieces can be found in museums and private collections, and were widely recognized for superb craftsmanship and simple, elegant design. She loved the beauty of the high desert, and the energy, warmth and acceptance of the artists' community in New Mexico.

She is survived by three children, Lydia, , David and Martha; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Aurora specifically requested that no funeral be held. A remembrance will take place in Santa Fe in autumn 2016.

Contributions in her name may be sent to The Spanish Colonial Arts Society.
