Aragon, Bennie J.

Bennie J. Aragon, 85, of Albuquerque peacefully passed away on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, with his family by his side and is now in the presence of our Lord.

Bennie was born on May 26, 1930, and became a Democratic state political figure in New Mexico, serving in the House of Representatives from 1967 to 1979, when he accepted an appointment to be a deputy secretary of Labor by Gov. Bruce King. While in the Legislature, he served as the Majority Whip and introduced legislation that established the Spanish Village at the State Fairgrounds.

Bennie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Josie; brother Frankie (Lilly); and his children Bennie Jr. (Evelyn), Bernice Herrera (Toby), Anthony, Robert (Peggy) and Margaret Chavez de Aragon. He has 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday followed by a Rosary at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming NE. Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna NW at 9 a.m. Friday.
