Montoya, Bernie

Bernie J. Montoya, 68, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 8, 2016. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Taos, New Mexico on April 14, 1948, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Lily Montoya of Taos, New Mexico.

Bernie retired from the City of Albuquerque as a Civil Engineer (Hydology). He enjoyed coaching little league in the South Valley and West Mesa leagues, and for Club Baseball for more than 20 years combined. He coached his son, daughter and grandson. He also enjoyed racing his pine wood derby cars, and was proud that he was always in the top of each competition. He served as a church board member at Valley Gospel Tabernacle, where he and his wife attended for more than 40 years.

He is survived by Celina Pacheco Montoya, his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years, along with three children, Bernadette (Rudy) Gutierrez of Albuquerque, NM, Bernie Jr. (Tana) of Peoria, AZ, and Julia Montoya of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren, Crystallyn Montoya (Rudy), PFC Joshuah Ray (U.S Army), Angel Montoya, Gilbert Montoya, Stephanie Gutierrez, Brianna Gutierrez, and Rudy Isaac Gutierrez; and two great-grandchildren, Rudy Christopher and Caiden Sais. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Lucero, of Taos, NM; brother, Gilbert (Julie) Montoya of Angola, Africa; mother-in-law, Ernestina Pacheco, of Arroyo Seco, NM; brothers-in-law, Carlos (Connie) Pacheco and Rudy (Theresa) Pacheco; sister-in-law, Eileen Pacheco, and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Lily Montoya; father-in-law, Elizardo Pacheco, and granddaughter, Savannah Gutierrez.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Candy, his "main nurse" at Presbyterian Interventional Radiology, who took special care to ensure that he was safe and comfortable during his monthly procedures.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at Harvest Fellowship, 5331 Montano Road NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87120.
