Berte Burkholder Obituary
Burkholder, Berte

Berte Burkholder passed on August 13, 2016 after a short illness in Phoenix. She was a vivacious 92 years young and full of vigor and ideas to the very end. She was a long time resident of Albuquerque.

Born Bertha Stevens in Trenton, Michigan to immigrant parents. She met her future husband in Michigan and began the life of a Navy wife over the next 23 years, where they had six children along the way when they retired in Albuquerque. Wed to Lcdr. John (Jack) Burkholder, USN (Ret), they both fell in love with New Mexico and decided to stay and start a business.

Their businesses started in 1965 was Sir John Tuxedos, right on Central Avenue, close to Nob Hill. Jack passed away shortly after Sir John's opened. Needless to say, and especially anyone that knew Berte, her businesses thrived over the next 33 years. During that time, she bought the bridal shop next door, Nancy Hamilton Bridals. The personal service and Berte's keen eye brought decades of brides and grooms and prom goers the best that Albuquerque had to offer. She was recognized during this time as an Albuquerque business woman of the year.

After the businesses closed with Berte's retirement in 1999, she and her long-time companion of over twenty years, Bill Wright, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.) retired to Sedona, Az., where Bill eventually succumbed to Alzheimer's. Her beautiful custom contemporary home was filled with her eclectic art collection.

Berte will be interned at the Sunset Memorial Mausoleum in Albuquerque. Please access her full obituary at
