Carolyn Ruth Verploegh Obituary
Verploegh, Carolyn Ruth

Carolyn Ruth Verploegh passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, 88 years to the day after she was born. She was born to Luella and Fred Calkins and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She moved to Las Cruces after she and Ed, her husband of 63 years, retired from teaching. She taught hundreds of children over her long career at Alvarado, Sandoval and Mark Twain Elementary. She also started her own kindergarten in Corrales, Cottonwood Kindergarten.

She had a long life as a political activist, human rights activist, environmentalist, philanthropist, and adventurer. She was a joyful giving mother to Curtis, Lisa and John, as well as to her grandchildren Benjamin, Russell, Miriam, Addie and Connor. She was a sister to Edith, Myron, Ralph, John and Joanne Calkins, and Jean Ryan.

But most of all she was a devoted wife and companion to her husband Ed Verploegh. Together they taught in Ethiopia, designed and built 3 homes, traveled the world together, and worked many years with organizations such as Mountain View Co-op, El Caldito Soup Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity. Her passing leaves us all with a hole in our lives we must work to fill with gratitude, compassion, love, generosity and joy. She would expect nothing less.

We will celebrate Carol's life at 11:00 on March 19th at First Christian Church, 1809 El Paseo Rd., Las Cruces, NM.

In lieu of flowers you may donate to Mesilla Valley Hospice or Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity.
