Cecil Bernhard Obituary
Bernhard, Cecil Judith (Millard)

Cecil Judith (Millard) Bernhard, daughter of Cecil Richards Millard and Ola Mae (Smith) Millard, came into this world in Austin, Texas, on November 22, 1939, and departed from it in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on October 9, 2016, passing peacefully in her sleep after experiencing a long illness. She is survived by her daughters, Willa Kathryn Bernhard-Brizzee, Carol Jeanne Bernhard, Sarah Judith Bernhard, and their spouses Boyd Brizzee and Joseph R. Matarese; her long-term partner of over 35 years, M. Francis Guzman, with whom she spent many joyful hours over the years dancing the night away; and her beloved cat, Cosmo. She is also survived by stepchildren Michael Bernhard, Alexandra Seyerle, and Deborah Sinclair, nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Judith received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico, where her studies included mythology, symbolism and archetypal psychology, intellectual passions that she carried with her throughout life. She approached food as an art and a craft, and authored a cookbook, Baba Yaga's Kitchen. Cooking simple and extravagant meals to share with family and friends, she found great joy and creativity in the kitchen. She passed this gift on to her daughters, who will continue to share that joy with the world. For her, the hearth truly was the home. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Stanley Bernhard. She will be deeply missed by her friends and family.

A service will be held at Alumni Memorial Chapel, The University of New Mexico Campus, on Friday, October 14, 2016, 2:30 to 4:30 pm to commemorate her passing into the spirit world and to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Animal Humane New Mexico.
