O'Bar, Clyde Russell

Clyde Russell O'Bar, age 78, slipped into eternity on Friday, February 3, 2017.

He resided the last eight months in a hospital setting. O'Bar never really recovered from a fall eight years prior. He spent many months in and out of hospitals and therapy centers.

Prior to the onset of ill health he was engaged in outdoor sports. He was a good golfer and enjoyed playing with friends for many years. Also, fishing took a part of his recreation time. He spent many hours alone, or with his wife at Fenton Lake. He liked being with friends yet enjoyed hours of solitude fishing. When weather inhabited his love for the outdoors, he would often play pool with friends at the Meadowlark Senior Center.

Clyde graduated from the University of San Francisco. After a stint in the US Navy, he also lived in California for 17 years.

He married and had three children, Susan, Keith and Michael. Michael, a young Army officer, precedes Clyde in death.

Keith and Susan live in South Carolina both in ill health and live close to their mother and stepfather.

O'Bar married MaryTom (Tommie) Riley on December 31, 1985. When this union occurred her son Joe was a teenager. As the years went by Clyde and Joe became the best of friends, Joe loved him like a Dad. They enjoyed playing golf and fishing together. Joe lives in Lubbock, TX , where Clyde and Tommie lived prior to retiring in Rio Rancho, NM.

Clyde was an excellent pilot. He and Tommie enjoyed going to weekend "fly-ins" all over the West. They flew many times to see parents and children. He also belonged to a glider club, many Sunday afternoons were spent gliding the West Texas skies. O'Bar was the president of the Lubbock Chapter of the Quiet Birdmen, a secret order of Certified Good Fellows and aviators, founded by Charles Lindberg in NYC in 1921. Clyde went to national conventions and enjoyed the friendship of fellow pilots. Due to heart problems he quit flying when he moved to New Mexico.

Clyde O'Bar worked hard, played hard and was a good man.
