1948 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Cynthia Jane Nye Obituary
Nye, Cynthia Jane

On a moonlit evening, May 20, 2016, Cynthia Jane Nye, 67, rode the stagecoach to heaven with John Wayne at the reins! She was born June 24, 1948 - no one loved life more! Cindy was an accomplished athlete who excelled in swimming, bowling, and bocce. She won countless Gold Medals, and was always most proud of her 1999 Gold Medal for swimming at the International Special Olympics in North Carolina. The theme for that event was "All About Attitude" and hers was always exceptional.

At age 18, Cindy graduated after five years at St. Coletta of Wisconsin, a Catholic residential school in Jefferson, Wisconsin, with a 100+ year history of championing full inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Cindy worked as a Volunteer Helper at Kirtland AFB Day Care Center for five years then at the former Eubank Day Care Center in NE Albuquerque for nearly 16 years. In January 2010, she enjoyed a wonderful retirement party and received a plaque thanking her for her outstanding service.

In 1989, she was named the State of NM Special Olympian of the Year for her invaluable contributions and loyal dedication.

In 1991, NM Governor Bruce King awarded Cindy with a Certificate of Appreciation for improving the quality of life for present and future generations of New Mexicans.

In 2010, the Hope Evangelical Free Church FRIENDSHIP CLUB recognized Cynthia Nye for her wonderful engaging laugh and her willingness to pray.

Cindy loved to take short "road trips" with her best friend and Coach, Linda Charzuk. For years she took annual trips to San Diego to "hang out on the beach", watch the sea gulls, and visit her favorite dolphins at SeaWorld: Toby, Gracie, and Connie. She said goodbye to her dolphins in March 2016.

Cindy loved completing crossword puzzles on her iPad. She had excellent taste in good films, particularly her John Wayne favorites: The Shootist, The Quiet Man, Stagecoach, McLintock, and Rio Bravo.

Music was very important to Cindy. She loved the score for The Shootist. The next time you hear these soundtracks, think of Cindy: Hairspray (2007), Sister Act I and II, Grease, and Mama Mia. In perfect pitch, she always sang along with tremendous enthusiasm and joy.

With Cindy, heaven is now filled with laughter, singing, dancing, swimming, bowling, bocce, good movies, and many adventures!

Cindy was pre-deceased by her wonderful mother, Patricia Price Nye who passed in 1980. Cindy is survived by her beloved father, Major General Francis W. Nye, USAF, Ret (Nina); her sisters, Janet Marie Nye Olson (Ronald A. Olson) and Patricia S. Nye, MD (Norma Gray); her nephews, David Olson and Daniel Olson; her niece, Patricia Olson Bredehoft and their families; her nephew, Gavin Gray who ran the 2016 Boston Marathon in her honor; her loving step brothers and sisters; her best friend and Coach, Linda Charzuk; and countless friends and fans.

A special thank you to Randy Mascorella, Exec Director - NM Special Olympics, Josie Pflieger - A New Vision Case Management, Patricia Schifani - Service Coordinator and Sue Kirchgessner, RN, Alianza Family Services, Elizabeth Sefkow, MS, CCC-SLP, ARCA-ACES Day Habilitation Program and Presbyterian Hospice for their tremendous support and kindness!

A Celebration of Cindy's Life will be held Friday, June 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH-Lomas Chapel. Cindy will be interred, with her mother, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, please consider mailing a tax-deductible donation to "AGS Special Olympics"-in care of New Mexico Special Olympics, 6600 Palomas Ave NE, Ste 207, Albuquerque, NM 87109.
