david mercer Obituary
Mercer, David E.

David Edward Mercer, Albuquerque and East Mountain resident since 1952, passed away on Tuesday, Aug 3rd, 2016 at his home in Cedar Crest, after a difficult struggle with cancer. He was 77.

He taught geography and history in APS for 30 years, at Rio Grande, Eldorado, and La Cueva high schools and touched the lives of thousands with his gentle kindness and wisdom. He was passionate about travel, living and working in Bristol, England on a Fulbright exchange in 1976-77, leading 15 European study tours with students and fellow teachers between 1980 and 1995, and taking several trips there to visit with old friends. He loved cars, owning 48 of them over the years, traveling frequently to races and car shows around the states and in Europe, and racing himself in SCCA/ASCC regional events. He also loved to design houses--a lifetime holdover from his days as an architecture student at UNM. He built and lived in two of the houses he designed, and he designed several which were built by and for family and friends.

A private memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donating to

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Ann, who he met while working at the Lobo theater in 1964; his son Michael, daughter-in-law Melissa; and his three favorite "kids," his granddaughter, Devon, his grandson, Chandan, and his puppy Indy.

He was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed and always remembered. We love you Pa!
