Demetra Tula "Dee" (nee Zavakos) Klenck

Born in Dayton, Ohio to Greek immigrant parents, "Tula"/"Dee" passed away on April 9, 2018 at the ripe old age of 91. The last few years of her life were tough due to the ravages of Alzheimer's. An active member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church since 1946, Dee married Bill Klenck in 1952, and together they raised their four children in Corrales. An involved parent, Dee volunteered in each of her children's schools, thereby ensuring they were well behaved youngsters, much to the children's chagrin. An avid gardener, Dee had a large garden where she and her children were often found in the summer months pulling weeds and smashing bugs, again to the kid's great annoyance. All displeasure was forgotten when they tasted her home-grown corn, asparagus and tomatoes. A great cook, she made the most amazing pies, especially apple and lemon meringue. She made Greek dishes she learned from her YiaYia' and was always willing to generously teach others to cook. Widowed in 1981, she found solace by volunteering for The Storehouse. She is survived by her four children, K.C. Klenck, Cristie Stein (Tony Stein), Angelo Klenck, Jane Potter (Joel Turner) and three grandchildren, Jillian Klenck (Erick Rodriguez), Emily Hartshorn and Olivia Potter. Dee's daughter, Cristie and son-in-law, Tony, put their lives on hold for many years to care for her in the way she deserved, and she was so fortunate to live out the last years of her life in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by those who loved her. Thank you to all the caregivers who helped Dee and her family. Services will be at St. George Church on April 11 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the of New Mexico.
