Boyd, Edna Wells Hubbart

Edna Wells Hubbart Boyd passed away peacefully in Alb, NM, on Friday, June 2, 2017, at age 84 with complications from lung cancer. Edna had never smoked except for five minutes as a teenager.

Edna was born on July 13, 1932, as the seventh and youngest child in the W.L. Wells family of Sumter, South Carolina. Her five older sisters and one brother were all outstanding students, and Edna was no exception. She graduated "summa cum laude" from Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina, in 1954, winning the Scholarship Cup at commencement. The next year, she was selected by the Danforth Foundation as a Danforth Graduate ("Danny Grad") and was sent to a college campus in Missouri to work with interreligious activities for a year.

For 31 years, Edna was on the faculty of Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, first as an English teacher and then as a counselor, retiring in 1994. She was also an active member of Albuquerque's First Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, Deacon's moderator, and elder.

Edna committed her entire life to helping and serving others; whether it was aiding high school students with entrance into college along with acquiring potential scholarships and financial aid, or donating from her own personal resources to help the less fortunate. Edna definitely lived an exemplary life, always willing to help and inspire those with whom she crossed paths. She made numerous sacrifices during her life to ensure that each of her sons' and grandchildren's needs, whatever they were at the time, were met. Edna also had a deep appreciation and love for Native Americans, as she joyfully served as their counselor during her time at Highland High School.

Edna was married twice: to Jerry Hubbart, with whom she had two sons, Wes and Glenn, both still alive today; and to Dr. John F. Boyd, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon. Both husbands predeceased her. She also has two grandchildren: Grace and Kyle Hubbart of Austin, TX.

A Memorial Service for Edna is tentatively planned for Friday, July 7, 2017, at 3 pm in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St NE Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, please tell someone a funny joke. [just make sure it's funny!]
