Elaine Poy Smith

April 21, 1971 - October 26, 2017

On Thursday October 26, 2017, Dr. Elaine Poy Smith, died from natural causes in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 46. Her final moments were peacefully shared with family, friends, and colleagues at Presbyterian Anna Kaseman Hospice. She is survived by her husband Matt, daughters Jasmine and Jennifer, parents Gordon and Eiko Poy, and brother Robert Poy (Janis Dunivin).

Elaine was born in Sacramento, California. As a child, her father's career in the United States Air Force provided her the rich life experience of living in Germany and Japan, where she graduated high school as the salutatorian. Elaine's family returned to the states where she and her brother attended UC Berkeley and participated in the Cal Marching Band. Upon graduating from Berkeley, Elaine attended and ultimately received her Doctor of Optometry from Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton, California. After graduation, Elaine moved to New Mexico where she practiced as an Optometrist for twenty years and was fondly known by patients as Dr. Poy. Elaine and Matt were married for twelve years and spent that time building a home and raising Jasmine and Jennifer with many joyous memories before her untimely death. Elaine's passion in life was the genetic improvement of the Ragdoll cat breed. She tirelessly studied and strived to improve her cats, which can be found domestically and internationally in breeding programs where they are valued for their appearance and health.

The family would like to thank the large number of cherished people that visited Elaine in hospice and provided her unwavering support. Elaine's Celebration of Life event will be held at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 14th, 2018 at 1pm.
