Gift, Eloise Agatha

Eloise Agatha Pearce Gift, 74, of Albuquerque, passed away the morning of Saturday January 7 after an unexpected cardiac incident. Eloise was born February 1, 1942 in Priestman's River, Portland Parish, Jamaica, to William and Gertrude Pearce.

Eloise (also known as Wilma) is survived by beloved husband Roger Kuhn, daughter Deena Fox (Gift), son Kevin Gift, daughter-in-law Bernice Pelea and step-daugher Kelly Kuhn; brothers Daniel Pearce, Owen Pearce, Eugene Pearce, Eaton Pearce; sisters Lurline Hall and Brenda Hyde.

Eloise attended Titchfield, Ardenne and Excelsior middle and high schools in Jamaica where she distinguished herself with honors before attending the University of London, West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. There she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish with a minor in Latin, as well as a post-graduate Diploma in Education.

As a very young adult she began to teach professionally on the faculty of one of her prior high schools. While at university she met Knowlson Gift, whom she married soon thereafter, leading to a two-decade vocation serving proudly alongside her husband in the diplomatic corps for Trinidad & Tobago. During these tours of duty she lived in Jamaica, Venezuela & Washington, D.C. & also earned her Master of Science degree in Library Science from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC

She later re-entered the teaching profession as a faculty member at private and public schools in Washington, D.C., and in Baltimore, Maryland, and as a school principal in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2001 she married Roger Kuhn and eventually relocated to Albuquerque where she established her own real estate company, Gift Realty, NM and was active in the local and state realty associations, Greater Albuquerque Association of Realtors and Realtors Association of New Mexico.

In her adopted home of Albuquerque she has been an avid servant of the community, serving as an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church of Rio Rancho and as a mentor for the Albuquerque Big Brother Big Sister program. Her many community activities also included serving on the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce Board, Realtors Association of New Mexico Board, ABC Library Board, and Speech, Language and Hearing Center Board, among others. Due to her passionate desire to serve others, at one time she was a also candidate for state representative and for the Albuquerque City Council.

Through her life and her personal example Eloise inspired excellence in everyone she met. Her heartfelt laughter, genuine affection for others and indomitable enthusiasm for life will long live on in the lives of those she touched, as will the memories of her unparalleled cooking, generous hospitality, love of language, and storied family Christmas cookies.

She is known and loved by many and will be sorely missed by numerous nieces and nephews, and by family members and friends far and near. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, sisters Lavena Carr and Irene Wright, and brothers Wilfred Pearce and Claude Pearce.

Funeral services will be held Sunday January 15 at 5 p.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church of Rio Rancho. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico, 2500 Louisiana NE, Suite 200, Alb, NM 87110. Please visit the online guestbook for Eloise at
