Pooler, Elvert G.



Elvert G. Pooler passed on to glory January 8, 2017 at the age of 91 in Albuquerque, NM.

He was born in Lewiston, ME, the son of George Pooler and Laura M. Pooler and grew up in Winthrop, ME. He graduated from Winthrop High School in May 1943. He entered the US Army in August of 1943 and spent 17 weeks in basic training in Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was shipped to England in May 1944 and then transported to Normandy France where he landed at Utah Beach 3 days after the invasion of France on June 6, 1944. He linked up with the 313th Infantry company, 79th Division and fought in the liberation of the City of Cherbourg France. Fighting across France he was wounded July 11th by a 6 inch metal fragment from a Germany artillery shell in the leg. After recovery in a hospital in England he was shipped back to the front and linked up with his unit Sept. 1st, 1944. He was wounded again on Dec. 9th getting a grazing shot to the head which temporarily paralyzed him for a period of time. After recovery from this second wound he was reassigned to the 9th Army Air Corp as a cook feeding the troops until being sent home and honorably discharged after the war. He was awarded numerous service medals of which include the European campaign medal, bronze star, purple heart with oak leaf cluster and on July 2, 2010 was presented with France's highest honor the Legion of Honor medal for heroism from the French Consulate General of Boston, MA in a ceremony held in Sanford, ME. He retired from Modern Woodmen of America as a life insurance agent in 1987 and enjoyed many years of snow-birding to Florida during the passing.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Pooler; brother, Everett Pooler; sisters, Beatice Mayo, Charlotte Lindholm & his wife, Barbara Pooler.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Bell of Hudson, WI; grandchildren, Gabrielle Reckin (grandsons, Parker and Mason), Monica Mathias; son, Elisha Bell and Michael Pooler of Rio Rancho, NM and grandchildren, Donald Pooler (grandchildren Michael and Audrina) and Christina Barnes.

A celebration of his life will be held at Gospel Light Baptist Church, 1500 Southern Blvd SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 on January 16, 2017 at 7pm.

Burial of his ashes will follow in the Spring of 2017 at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME where he will be buried next to his wife, Barbara Pooler.
