Eva Gyongyosi Obituary
Gyongyosi, Eva

Eva Gyongyosi, 83, of Albuquerque, NM, died on July 13th at Presbyterian Kaseman Inpatient Hospice following a brief illness.

She was born August 10th, 1932 in Budapest, Hungary to Dr. Tamas and Gizella Benson.

She grew up in the metropolitan area amongst opera houses and concert halls, developing social graces that served throughout her life. She was trained as a teacher, but never took up the profession. Her stunning appearance and exuberant personality led her to become a stewardess for Malev Airline in the early '50's. In 1956, she was engaged to Laszlo (Les) Gyongyosi, an engineer and former Olympic swimmer, when the Hungarian Revolution brought quick change. In the course of a few days, they decided to join thousands of Hungarians in leaving their friends, family and an oppressive government for a chance at a better future. They arrived in the United States in February, 1957. They were married that same month at the refugee camp in Camp Kilmer, NJ before settling in Easton, Pa. Les began a career with Ingersoll Rand Corp. that subsequently located them in Clarksburg, WV.; Orrville, OH; and Garland, TX. At each location, Eva quickly became renowned for her gourmet cooking and amazing hospitality.

She was also a loving mother; creating a close family and providing the guidance needed for their two sons to start successful careers. As an empty nester, she returned to the retail experience she'd had in Easton, and was a valuable sales person at Dillard's for almost 20 years.

Eva and Les' retirement years were full with travels abroad, cross country ski trips with dear friends, and enjoying their grandchildren. In 2008, she and Les moved to Albuquerque to be closer to family. They discovered the Hungarian-American Club of New Mexico, through which they developed many close friendships.

Eva is survived by sons Lester Gyongyosi of Albuquerque and Tom (Julie) Gyongyosi of Parkersburg, WV; and grandchildren Sam of Denver, CO, Maddy of Albuquerque, Megan of Snowshoe, WV and Nicholas, currently serving in Fort Benning, GA.

She was preceded in death by Laszlo, her husband of 59 years, who died due to complications of Alzheimer's this last February. She was also preceded in death by her parents and younger brother, Tamas Benson, of Budapest.

A memorial will be held at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Daniels' Carlisle Chapel, 3113 Carlisle NE, Albuquerque.
