Evelyn A. Vigil of Isleta Pueblo and Tesuque Pueblo (by marriage), passed away peacefully in Albuquerque at Northridge Special Care Facility at the age of 94 after a long illness.

She is survived by her son, Martin A. Vigil III; son-in-law, Phillip D. Palmer; Granddaughter, Sparo Arika Vigil; brother-in-law, Herman Vigil and his wife, Isabel Vigil; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Antonio (Tony) and Eva Mae Abeita; husband, Martin E. Vigil Jr., daughter, Judge Carol Jean Vigil; adoptive son, James (Jimmy / Telk) Elkus; sisters, Antoinette Estevan and Althea Alonzo; brothers, Willis Abeita, Lummis Abeita and Raymond Abeita.

Evelyn was born on September 14, 1921 and spent her childhood in Isleta Pueblo. She attended the Albuquerque Indian School where she was Homecoming Queen in her senior year. She went on to pursue a nursing degree as a Cadet Nurse and settled in Albuquerque. She married Martin E. Vigil, Jr. of Tesuque Pueblo and raised their daughter and son while working at the Albuquerque Indian Hospital as Assistant Head Nurse. She retired after 30+ years of service and helped raise her granddaughter while enjoying gardening and quilting. She moved with her husband and family to Tesuque Pueblo in 1980 where she was an active member. Evelyn was a devoted Catholic, a loving and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will always be remembered and hold a beloved place in our hearts.

Our deep gratitude to the Northridge staff and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care of Evelyn throughout her time spent there during her illness.
