Flora Stella Perea, age 81, a resident of Belen, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2016. Flora was born on September 21, 1934 in Espanola, New Mexico. Flora excelled in education. In May 1952, she was selected as Valedictorian of her high school. Following high school, she was a recipient of the Ford Foundation (4 years) scholarship to attend the University of New Mexico. There she was selected and became a member of various university activities; namely Phrateres 1953, 1954 and President of Phrateres in 1955, SPARS, Newman Club and Pi Lambda Theta. The most prestigious was to be honored by her selection to become a member of the Mortar Board during her senior year, which she served as secretary. This is a National Senior Women's honorary society, based on Scholarship, leadership and service to the University. Flora worked at Sandia Lab and Los Alamos Labs before she became a teacher at Los Lunas High School. She was a business teacher, sponsored OEA, NEA and Safety awareness, and was class sponsor following class of 1971. She retired from teaching in 1992. Her remaining years were devoted to her family and never ceasing to gain knowledge in our ever changing world. Flora was married to the love of her life, Manuel for 60 years. They met on a blind date on November 6, 1954 at the University of New Mexico during homecoming. They were married on August 25, 1956 in Espanola, New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Maestas and Theresita Pacheco Maestas; sisters, Rosana Sandoval and Ernestine Martinez; brother, Eugenio "Harpy" Maestas.

Flora is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Manuel B. Perea; daughter, Arlene and her husband, Danny and their children, Camille Garcia and partner Eric Chavez, Marissa and her husband, Adrian Vega and Marcos Garcia; daughter, Tami Marie and her husband, Joseph Martinez and their children, Patrice Martinez, Isaac Martinez and Jacob Martinez and his wife, Belleza and their children, Aaron, Annelieze, Angelo; son, Manuel Thomas Perea and his children, Sr. Airman Ramon Perea (US Air Force), Angela Perea and Tomas Perea.

All services will be held on Thursday, July 7 at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church beginning with viewing at 8:00 AM, followed by the Rosary at 9:00AM, with the eulogy at 9:30AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the historic section at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at the Parish Center. Pallbearers will be Ramon Perea, Tomas Perea, Jacob Martinez, Isaac Martinez, Marcos Garcia and Adrian Vega. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Los Lunas High School Class of 1971. Speakers will be Mr. Brian Colon and NM State Senator, Michael Padilla.
