Mance, Gaylord Emmanuel Sr.

Gaylord Emanuel Mance Sr., aged 89 years passed on April 4, 2017 in Springfield, OR. He was born in Evanston, IL on Feb. 19, 1928 to Stonewall Jackson and Anna Mae Mance. At 19 he enlisted in the Air Force; notably, he was a ground Safety Instructor for the Tuskegee Airmen and during the Korean Conflict, he was a part of the Titan Missile Project as Safety Engineer. Gaylord had 3 careers: military service, working for IBM, and, after returning to university for his Master's degree, as a university lecturer of public speaking and business communications.

During his life he held a lifetime membership in the NAACP, was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and served as a Human Relation Commissioner. He moved to New Mexico in 1990 to teach at University of New Mexico. He made a dream come true he became a charter member of the Ninth Cavalry of the Buffalo Soldiers and enjoyed reenactments and presentations. After retirement he worked as a security guard until he was 82.

He was laid to rest on April 11, with military honors in the National Cemetery in Roseburg, OR. He is survived by his children, Steven (Christita), Paula and Marc; two grandsons, Steven, Jr. and Jonas; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
