Hans Ernest Bechtel Obituary
Bechtel, Hans Ernest

Hans Ernest Bechtel, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, NM and former resident of Moscow, Idaho, died in his sleep April 18, 2016, in Albuquerque. He had just turned 53.

Hans was born April 18, 1963, in Albuquerque to Friend and LuAnn Bechtel. In 1965, the family relocated to West Lafayette, IN, and remained there four years before returning to Albuquerque. In 1973, the family moved to the family farm in Iowa. Two years later, they moved to Moscow, Idaho.

Hans graduated from Moscow High School in 1981. He later earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho. Hans returned to Albuquerque, where he earned a Master's degree in Education.

Hans was a kind, gentle spirit who largely marched to his own drummer. He had a tremendous memory and exceptional reading skills. When he set his mind to doing something, he did it all the way and determinedly saw it through to the finish. He enjoyed working with computers since the early days of personal computers. He could take a computer others might think long past its useful life and make it dance. He especially enjoyed teaching computer use and programming to anyone, including first graders, university professors, and long-retired individuals. He was involved in a variety of business ventures. Hans designed web pages, maintained computers, and taught computer classes in Moscow and in Albuquerque to anyone who wanted to learn. Some of his students went on to successful careers in major computer firms. He had many friends in Albuquerque and around the country. He went out of his way to help others.

Hans was preceded in death by his mother.

He is survived by his father Friend Bechtel of Mead, Washington; brother Eric (Trish) of Moscow, Idaho; brother Mark (Julie) of Elk River, Minnesota; and many other family members. He will be sorely missed, but we know he is in the hands of his Heavenly Father and walking again with his beloved mother and grandmothers.

A memorial service honoring Hans's life was held at the Event Palace in Albuquerque on April 23, 2016, and his ashes were scattered on the Sandia Mountains overlooking the city he loved.
