Bency, Helen Louise

Helen Louise Bency, age 83, passed peacefully on Dec. 4, 2015. Born in 1933 in Albuquerque, NM, to Mercedes Martinez & Sixto Valdez, both Educators.

She graduated from Northern New Mexico Normal School in El Rito, NM, in 1951. She graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with a degree in Elementary Education and taught in the Espanola Valley for 28 years; along with her husband, Ted Bency, who was also a teacher. They retired to Belen, NM, in 1995. Always learning, Helen became an accomplished weaver winning numerous awards. Her work is in many private collections and in the permanent collection in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, NM. She also combined her passions of teaching & weaving. She taught weaving at the Ghost Ranch Festival of Arts Program, Oke Oweenge Pueblo & gave private lessons. She was a member of ART through the LOOM, Las Tejedoras, Las Aranas, Fiber to Finish, Valencia County Association of Educational Retirees & New Mexico State Association of Educational Retirees.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia of Belen & Robert of Espanola; brothers, Eli & Ernest of Santa Fe & grandsons, Kersen of New York City & Michael of Grand Junction, CO.

An Interment Ceremony will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery where she will join her beloved husband, Ted, on April 7th, 2017 at 10:30am.
