Ortiz, Hilda Rivera

Hilda Rivera Ortiz, age 96, passed away on February 26, 2017.

She was born in Quebrada Limon, Puerto Rico and came to New Mexico in 1950 with her husband and her infant daughter. She lived in Chama and then Los Alamos where her second daughter was born. In 1953 she left New Mexico and moved to Visalia, California, where she raised her three daughters with love, faith and devotion. For 33 years she was a high school Spanish teacher, loved and esteemed by her many students over the years, and head of the Foreign Language Department. In retirement, she offered an intensive Spanish speaking program for Episcopal clergy from throughout the U.S. at a conference center near Yosemite Park. She also traveled extensively both nationally and internationally, enjoying time with friends and family wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by her devoted brother, the Rt. Rev. Victor Rivera and his wife Barbara Rivera.

She is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Irene Ortiz and her husband Sigifredo Saenz of Albuquerque, Ana Marie Ortiz and her husband, Dahl Harris, of Santa Fe, Hildy Ortiz and her husband, Marcus Nieto, of Elk Grove, CA; grandchildren, Gabriel Saenz and wife Kerry Greer, Raquel Saenz, Victor Nieto, Michelle Nieto and great-grandson Raphael Saenz.

Hilda will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her. She was always ready to laugh, full of generosity, a talented seamstress, an accomplished bridge player, and most of all a lover of life and the Lord. She was an incredibly strong woman, with constant energy, joy, and vibrancy, always lighting up the lives of those around her.

A memorial will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 10:00 am at Manzano del Sol Chapel located at 5201 Roma Ave NE. The service will be officiated by her niece, the Rt. Rev. Nedi Rivera.
