Howard W. McConeghey passed away on March 28, 2016 at the age of 95 years in Albuquerque, NM. Howard was born April 30, 1920 in Newton, IA, to Mr. and Mrs. Bert McConeghey. He is preceded in death by four brothers (one his twin); one sister; and his wife, Evelyn. Howard is survived by one sister, Ruth.

Howard served in the ETO with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II, at which time he also met Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. He was a teacher, a painter, and an art therapist, A.T.R. He taught art at all grade levels from preschool through post graduate in the public schools of Missouri, Maryland, Wisconsin, Washington, and New Mexico, and taught prospective teachers in colleges and universities in these same states.

Howard received his B.F.A Degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where he studied painting with Max Beckman among others. He then went to Paris, France where he studied with Fernand Leger. His Master's Degree was from New Mexico Highlands University and his doctoral Degree in Education and Philosophy was from Michigan State University.

Howard came to the University of New Mexico as chairman of the Department of Art Education in 1973, where he established the archetypal art therapy program in 1975, which he directed until his retirement in 1990.

Howard had one-man exhibitions of his paintings in Iowa, Missouri, Maryland, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New Mexico. He published many articles on art, art education, and art therapy, and one book, Art-Making as Soul-Making: Reclaiming the Authority of Art in Art Therapy and Art Education.
