J. Leon Martinez, age 91, went to meet our Lord in the early morning hours of August 10, 2016 surrounded by loved ones at his home in Las Vegas, NM.

He is survived by his wife Lettie E. Martinez, of Las Vegas; Children, Sharon Martinez, of ABQ; LeRoy Martinez, of ABQ; Leona Montoya (Carlos), of LV; Melissa Dueñas (Michael) of Belen; Jennifer Loera (Marvin) currently stationed in Guatemala; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; brother Leroy Martinez (Judy) of LV, Sister in law Sylvia Ortega, of Guadalupita, Brother in law Roman Gutierrez of Florida; sole living Aunt, Flora Arellanes of SF; close relatives Sam and Dora Vigil, Helen Arellanes, Bob Arellanes, Gilbert Arellanes (Armida), Tito Herrera, Celeste Garduno and Preciliano Martin; numerous family members and Loved Ones.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Arminio Martinez and Mother Florence Martinez, both of Las Vegas; Cousins Arthur Chavez, Louis Delgado and George Arellanes, all of LV.J. Leon was born on November 16, 1924 in Las Vegas, NM to parents Arminio and Florence.

He graduated earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education; enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. He married Lettie Gutierrez on December 27, 1947 and raised five children. He began his career as an educator for the Pecos School & West Las Vegas School Districts as a High School teacher. He loved teaching and did so for 31 yrs. He was a very social, active member of the American Legion Post 12 (Dept. Vice-Commander, Exec. Committeeman, then District State Commander). He took pride in his involvement with the American Legion Boys State (counselor for over 30 yrs.) LV Kiwanis and AARP also member of the Educators CU Board of Dir., N.M.B.E.F., Chair of Consolidated City of LV Housing Authority and the NERH Corp. Board. He enjoyed family time and philanthropy. His family and friends will remember him as a "jokester", and a man who proudly educated generations.

Rosary Services are scheduled for Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 7:00pm, Funeral Services scheduled for Monday, August 15, 2016, at 9:00am; both at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father George Salazar as celebrant. Interment will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 10:30 am at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Carlos, Marvin, Michael, Sammie, Jerry and JL. Honorary Bearers will be all his grandchildren.
