Jeffrey Mortensen Obituary
Mortensen, Jeffrey

Jeffrey "Jeff" Gustav Mortensen, husband and father, civil engineer, musician, swimmer, lover of dogs, and old Westerns, died in Albuquerque, NM, on July 21, 2016, at the age of 62, after a courageous encounter with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Jeff was born on March 25, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA, to Gustav and Wilma Mortensen. He earned civil engineering degrees from Drexel University and the University of New Mexico.

On May 1, 1982, he married the love of his life, Nancy Smith, in a ceremony at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel. Jeff and Nancy raised their two dear children, Savannah and Jacob. Friends remember Jeff, clipboard in hand, at his children's swim meets, where he arranged his work schedule around their events. He was incredibly proud of his children's endeavors, in the pool and in the classroom.

Known for his high professional standards and work ethic, Jeff was a talented civil engineer. His relationships with colleagues at High Mesa Consulting Group and the accomplishments they shared were a source of great satisfaction. His dedication to his profession and New Mexico's communities are evident by engineering excellence awards he received for designs of the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex and Corrales Elementary School Constructed Wetlands.

Jeff is survived by cherished family members: wife, Nancy Smith Mortensen of Albuquerque, NM; son, Jacob G. Mortensen of Albuquerque, NM; daughter and son-in-law-to-be, Savannah L. Mortensen DDS and Christopher Banas of Detroit, MI; brother and sister-in-law, Eric W. and Juni Mortensen of Nashville, GA; and father and mother-in-law, Jim and Dot Smith of Albuquerque, NM.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav W. and Wilma M. Mortensen.

Jeff's family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including: Employees and Partners at High Mesa Consulting Group, especially, John and Chuck Cala, Lobo Aquatics Club Masters Swim Team, and the UNM Women's Swim Team. UNM Hospital Department of Neurosurgery, Presbyterian MD Anderson Radiation Treatment Center at Kaseman Hospital, Presbyterian Cancer Care, Duke Medical Center, and Presbyterian Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Jeff may be made to the Civil Engineering Department at UNM (UNM Foundation, c/o Courtney Holmes, UNM School of Engineering, MSCO1 1140, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131-0001) or to Splash Away Cancer
