Dr. Joan Mortimer passed away on 1/10/16 in Cleveland, Ohio after a short illness. She was born Corinne Joan Falcon Rothwell on 5/21/23 in New York to Albert C. Rothwell and Finita Falcon Rothwell. Joan graduated from Smith College, where she met Dartmouth graduate Edward A. (Ted) Mortimer Jr MD who she married in 1944. She had boundless energy. As a young mother she made all of her own clothes and many of her children's clothes. Joan served as President of the PTA, ran a cooperative neighborhood nursery school and was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. She found time to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Returning to school, she received a Masters degree in Curriculum and Education from Case Western Reserve University and worked as a substitute teacher in the Cleveland Heights schools. In 1966, the family moved to Albuquerque New Mexico where Ted was the chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UNM Medical School. She received a PhD in Psychology from UNM in 1974. She worked in New Mexico as a psychologist and educator with a special focus on literacy. She and Ted returned to Cleveland in 1975 where she went to work as a psychologist in the department of Child Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University Medical School. She was ultimately a tenured full professor in the department and ran the psychology internship program. She was active with the Women's Community Foundation. After her retirement, she lived at Judson Manor and served on various committees and boards. She was a great sailor in her youth on Long Island and later with her grandchildren. She travelled extensively, to South America and Japan with Ted and later to Belgium, France, Italy and Yellowstone National Park. Before his death in 2002, she and Ted spent many happy hours snorkeling among the coral reefs of the Caribbean, the Great Barrier Reef and the reefs of Fiji.

At age 90 she married Albert Borowitz who survives her. Al brought great joy and happiness to her last years. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Joanne Mortimer (Michael Drain) of Cleveland, Ohio; sons Ted Mortimer (Linda Boudreault) of Vershire, Vermont and Stan Mortimer (Laura) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as grandchildren Chris, Michael, Colin and Amanda Mortimer.

She was predeceased by husband Ted and grandson Andrew Mortimer.
