Joe Sanchez Obituary
Sanchez, Joe Bennie

1927-2016

Joe V. "Bennie" Sanchez, age 89, a lifelong resident of Belen, NM, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Monday, August 30, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 24, 1927, in Jarales, to the late Ramon and Eusebia Sanchez. Bennie was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and loved playing the guitar and singing at the 8:00 a.m. Mass with the Spanish Choir. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as a Grand Knight and District Deputy. He served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in Germany from 1944-1946.

In 1949 Bennie founded his Hub Furniture and Carpet Company here in Belen, still run by his son, Michael and other family members. In his later years, Bennie became a land developer in the area. He was greatly involved in his community joining many organizations including Belen Chamber of Commerce (past President), Ranchers State Bank (past Director), and Belen Lions Club (past President). Bennie was appointed Director at Los Lunas Hospital and Training School by then Governor, Jack Campbell. He was appointed by Governor Bruce King to serve on the State Police Board. Bennie was a member of the New Mexico Amigos (New Mexico Ambassadors), traveling throughout the US and other countries. He went to NMSU Auctioneering School, and was the Auctioneer at many auctions throughout NM.

Although enjoying great business succes, he enjoyed most of all traveling with his wife and family, having family, (traveling to Europe several times), family celebrations, gardening, playing guitar, learning new languages, playing cards, and going to his "ranchito" in Abo near Mountainair.

Bennie will be remembered by his family and friends for his amazing spirit and enthusiasm and sense of joy in everything he did weather if it was for fun or business. He was there for anyone who needed anything, from financial help or a shoulder to cry on. He was considered a friend and inspiration to all. His enthusiasm never left even in his last days… singing old folk songs, which he sang to his family for the past 50+ years. He loved repeating inspirational quotes in English, Spanish and German and tellin many colorful stories about his past. From the time he was 10 years old, he was a business person selling newspapers in Prescott, Arizona going to upholstery school and opening other businesses in Belen, the city he loved and was passionate about seeing thrive until the end. He was an Angel here on the earth, (everyones) "safety net" and now he is an Angel watching over us in heaven.
