Cunico, John J.

John J. Cunico, 80, of Albuquerque passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

John was born July 15, 1936 in Raton, NM to Mike and Vallie Cunico. He graduated from Kiowa High School in 1954 and attended New Mexico State University, receiving a degree in Civil Engineering. John married Georgia Gardiner in 1956. They were married over 61 years. After graduating from NMSU, he went to work for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He retired from the Corp in 1991 as Deputy District Engineer. In 1988 John was awarded Outstanding Engineer of the Year by the Department of the Army (DOA). Upon retirement he received a commendation for Meritorious Performance of Duty from the DOA. He always said his many accomplishments were due to the great education he received from NMSU and in 1986 he became a charter member of the Academy of Civil Engineering. In 1988, NMSU's Centennial Year he was awarded Outstanding Alumnus for the College of Engineering.

After retirement he spent as much time as possible at his place in Elephant Butte, fishing, boating and entertaining friends. John's hobby was woodworking. He built many beautiful pieces of furniture as well as carving furniture. John was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner, belonging to Ballut Abyad Temple where he held many positions.

John is survived by his wife Georgia, his two sons Dean and Mike Cunico, one brother Donald Cunico of Alamogordo, one sister Shirley Hooper of Eagle Nest, his daughter-in law Becky Gardiner. His grandchildren, Keisha Cunico, Lisa Childs (Jon), Mat Gardiner, four great- grandchildren, a special nephew Shane Cunico (Lola), nieces Kaycee Hooper, Kara Mutz (Kevin), and LaDonna Maxwell (Tom), and his best and longtime friend Gary Schwartzman (Sherrell). John was predeceased by his parents, his son Mike Gardiner, brother Jerry Cunico and daughter-in-law Diana Cunico.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 12:00 noon at Ballut Abyad Temple on 6600 Zuni S.E. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the New Mexico or the Shriner Cripple Children's Hospital.

The family would like to thank Compassus Hospice, his caregiver Kristy, his nurses Donna and Nicole for the kind and gentle care they gave John during his final days.
