John H. Nessbitt Obituary
Nessbitt, John H.

John "Jack" Nesbitt, age 80, passed away quietly on Friday, January 8, 2016, with his son Mike by his side. Jack was a very active individual. You could always count on him to either be out on the golf course, in a bowling alley, chopping wood, practicing shot put and discus throwing for Senior Olympics, or out irrigating his fields. He enjoyed intricate math formula puzzles which entailed a lot of thought. He baked the best breads which he would share with family and friends, zucchini bread was his favorite to make. Jack was an avid reader and had a love of music. He was blessed with an incredible singing voice and would proudly sing for anyone. He would also recite poems for family and friends. The Cremation of Sam McGee being one of his crowd favorites. One might say Jack knew a lot about everything. Above all, his best quality was his caring and compassionate heart. He was a Christian man who believed in the Lord and worked towards carving out his place in Heaven. He was a gentle giant of a man whom never met a stranger. His deep blue eyes and brilliant smile were sure to win over anyone.

Jack was born on August 5th, 1935 in Greeley, CO. He graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, in 1958. He was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity from 1954 until he graduated. Jack served in the Army Corps of Engineers for several years. He then worked for the US Government Soil and Conservation Department until 1993 when he retired. However, retirement was too mundane for Jack so he found a second career as a shuttle driver for National Rent-a-Car which lasted for over fifteen years. He thoroughly enjoyed working there and meeting new people. He did eventually retire from National as well.

Among Jack's many hobbies was his love of sports. Being from Colorado, he was a great Denver Broncos fan. He followed many sports and enjoyed the New York Yankees as well. His favorite teams were always those his son coached and played for, and later on, those which his grandson played for as well. Jack could always be found in the stands at Mike's games with a stopwatch, pencil and pad in hand. He was Mike's greatest statistician.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lorraine Nesbitt; his mother, Virginia Culbertson Nesbitt; his father, Harold Nesbitt of Longmont, CO; and his sisters, Norma Christensen and Alice Aldrich. He is survived by his son Michael Nesbitt and wife, Camille of Canyon, TX; his grandson and chess/poker partner in crime, Gavin Nesbitt of Canyon, TX; his brother, Don Nesbitt and wife, Janet of Idaho. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

A memorial service will be held, Friday, January 15th at 10:00 a.m. at Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main Street, Belen, NM 87002 with interment to follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery, 1200 W. Aragon Rd., Belen, NM 87002. Pallbearer will be Gavin Nesbitt.
