McKiernan, John William



John McKiernan, age 93, died at home in Albuquerque on April 7, 2016. He began his life January 12, 1923, in Hannibal, Missouri. Following time in the Army Air Corps as a B-24 pilot in WWII, he married Jeannette Hagen in 1945.

Together they raised three children: Kathy Hamilton, Linda McKiernan-Allen and John E. McKiernan. He enjoyed family life with these kids and their spouses; his seven grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

Jeannette died in 2002 after 56 years of marriage.

In 2006, he married Dr. Mercedes Altizer, who survives him. John became part of her family, connecting to her children: Martin, Bruce, Adelle and Elden; their spouses and four grandchildren.

John earned degrees at University of Missouri and Iowa State University. He worked as a mechanical engineer for Sandia National Laboratory from 1951 to 1985 and was a leader for the professional organization ASME. In retirement, he expanded volunteering with church and civic organizations; continued traveling; listened to big band music; and played handball and tennis (representing New Mexico at the 1995 National Senior Games). Throughout his life, he enjoyed close friendships with members of his extended family, his church family, co-workers, sports rivals, neighbors and classmates.

A Service of Thanksgiving for his life will be on April 29, 2016 at 11:00 am at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, his church home since 1951. A light lunch will follow at the church. The family suggests memorials to Monte Vista or a .
