Joseph E. Schroeder Obituary
Schroeder, Joseph E.

Joseph E. Schroeder died this week at age 95 from a heart valve problem for which he had been on Hospice. His passing was mercifully quick and painless.

Most of his life was spent in Marshall, Michigan. Even as a boy he was enterprising. He delivered papers and sold Saturday Evening Post. Debate team in high school set the stage for a lifetime of gathering facts, building arguments and presenting and defending his position. He remembers nearly getting run over as his dad learned to drive their first Model T Ford. He shared stories of his family's first telephone and radio with his own children. It's hard to imagine that at the beginning of his life the tools we now rely on for conducting life did not exist.

He attended University of Michigan for both an undergraduate business administration degree and a degree in law. During WW II he was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. He returned to Marshall with his bride, Shirley Clevenger, and joined his father's law practice. With Shirley he had and raised four children and celebrated 64 years of marriage before her death. Their daughter Kathy is a retired physician in Albuquerque, NM. Son Tom is an attorney and Bill is a computer programmer both in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC. Tom's daughter Carly travels worldwide setting up veterinary dermatology clinics. Daughter Deb is a veterinarian in Madison, WI. Joe was active in the School Board and the First Presbyterian Church.

He has always been socially-minded and people oriented. His greatest satisfaction came from contributions to the quality of life of the people around him and building strong and viable communities. He ran for and served as Mayor of Marshall from 1989 until 1995 when he moved to the retirement community La Vida Llena in Albuquerque, NM. There he served on the Board of Directors of the Full Life Foundation, provided counsel on revision of by-laws and worked with funding the foundation. His final ten years were graced with the delightful companionship of Helen Schmidt. He and his toy poodle Sparky walked daily and served as ambassadors spreading cheer to anyone who wished to share in their joy for life.

There is no funeral home as Joe has opted to donate himself to UNM School of Medicine. When he decided on this option he jokingly announced he would be the second family member to go to Kathy's alma mater.

A Celebration of Life was held at La Vida Llena's Carter Hall, 10501 Lagrima de Oro NE, on Saturday afternoon March 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm.

No flowers, please donate to , the United Way of Central New Mexico at 2340 Alamo SE Unit 200, Albuquerque 87106 attention Alice Fisher or to the Full Life Foundation at La Vida Llena.
