Herrera, Joseph "Uncle Joe"

In Memory of Our Family Angel, Joseph "Uncle Joe" Herrera. Born July 30, 1962, I remember hearing "El nino esta malo. Tiene que quadrase en l'hospital. He came home a sick, little baby, weighing less than 5 pounds. Then I heard, "Pienso q'el nino esta retardado." Scary. From the very start, he faced challenges, you & I will never experience & he did it all with a smile, never a word of complaint, did everything diligently & to his fullest. He was true servant. He carried the innocence of a child. He loved KISS & all rock music.

His favorite past-time was spending time with our Sister Tootsie (Frances) and her family, attending her sons' wrestling tournaments when he was young; and after those nephews were grown, graduated to going to the casino with tootsie and Johnny, her husband. After Tootsie died in 2015, it was Mass, coffee and casino with Carlos, his brother-in-law or niece Maya, or just hanging out with his nephews, Little Guy and Alan, the fights on Saturday night at Lily's, his niece; most times happy talking of rock music to any interested soul, or just simply spending time with family. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, didn't curse. He had a smile for everyone, even at the hand of a hateful world. Joseph wasn't so retardado after all. He was smart, witty, quick to correct you when you were wrong. He was our Family Angel.

He is survived by his sisters Mary (Tiny), Kathy and husband Carlos, brothers William, Leonard and wife Tina. He was preceded in death by his father Saulo & mother Lola & sister Frances. He will be greatly missed.

Rosary will be Friday, Sept. 8th at 10:15am followed of Mass of the Resurrection at 11am at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church, 5415 Fortuna NW, 87105. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE, 87102, concluding with a reception at Vigil Contracting, 1512 Coors SW, 87121. Please join us for all or one of these ceremonies in celebrating Joseph, Our Family Angel.
