White, Julia Carson

Julia Carson White, age 94, died Monday, 12 December 2016. Her parents were Julia Brackett Carson and William Waller Carson. She was born on 9 December 1922 in Chicago, Illinois and was reared in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of 5 siblings.

She married Walter William "Bill" White on 11 June 1943. Julia was awarded her B.A. from Barnard College in 1945 and in 1991 received Barnard's Distinguished Alumna Award. Her husband's career took the family abroad for 8 years in Asia, first to Taipei, then to Saigon. After Julia and Bill moved to Albuquerque in 1974, Julia served her community in many ways. She was president of the League of Women Voters of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County and reapportionment chair and lobbyist for the League of Women Voters of New Mexico. She was a member of Albuquerque Goals Committee, 1983 - 1984. She was chair of the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Task Force, June 1988 until March 1990, when it merged to become the New Mexico Teen Pregnancy Coalition: Prevention and Parenting. She was president of Rio Grande Planned Parenthood, June 1990 - June 1992. In 1993 and 1994, she supported the development of school-based health centers in New Mexico. Julia received the YWCA Women on the Move Award in 1989. She sang in the New Mexico Symphony Chorus from 1976 to 1993 and was active in the Democratic Party. A life-long Episcopalian, she delighted in the community of St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church. Julia once described her favorite wisdom: "Happiness is the exercise of one's vital abilities along the lines of excellence in a life that affords them scope."

Julia was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2006 and her daughter Lavinia Browning White in 2014.

She is survived by her daughters Susan Greenwood White and Gauri Karoli; her granddaughters Gauri Ganga Little, Yamuna Roxanne Gallegos, Maria Bhadra Kali Little and Morgan Katherine White; and her great grandchildren Metzli Valadez-Little, Sol Tlanezi Valadez-Little and Naya Vida Rose Gallegos.

The funeral will be on Friday, 23 December 2016 at 1:30 pm at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in memory of Julia White to St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, the League of Women Voters of New Mexico or Rio Grande Planned Parenthood.
