Karen Ann Eakins Steele

Karen Ann Eakins Steele was born January 30, 1951 in El Paso, TX to Betty Lu Eakins and the late Phil Eakins. She passed away January 17, 2018.

Karen graduated from Sandia High School in 1969. She got her degree in Special Education from NMSU.

Karen found joy in everyday life. She liked reading, playing cards with her mother and sisters, and doing the puzzles in the paper. But she loved going to "water" at Lovelace Rehabilitation Center. She volunteered in the front office at Dennis Chavez Elementary School for nearly 25 years. Karen was also a fan of Lobo football and basketball. Karen had a radiant spirit, and people were drawn to her. She was a good and compassionate listener. Karen also called it like she saw it.

Although Karen lived with MS for 37 years, she refused to let it define her. She did not complain. Through her strong will, she found a way to do whatever she wanted.

Karen leaves behind her husband of 47 years, Jim Steele; sons, Camden Steele (Jessica Menning) and

Tyler Steele (Brenda); mother, Betty Eakins; sisters, Lynn Guy, Beth Dawkins (Ed) and

Lisa Nan Myers; niece, Melanie Frazier (Shawn); nephew, Philip Dawkins (Bryan Bosque); great-nieces Kiersten Rodriguez and Ashlyn Rodriquez. She also had many friends who will miss her deeply.

Karen was adamant that there be no service. She often said, "If you leave early, we'll talk about you." Her family looks forward to talking about her and sharing fond memories of her life, knowing where she is, she's "just swell."
