Kathleen "Kay" McMann Obituary
McMann, Kay

Kathleen "Kay" Schertz McMann, 90, of Rio Rancho, NM, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, June 29, 2016. Kay was born in La Junta, Colorado on August 23, 1925 to Walter A. Schertz and Katie Zook Schertz.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Earl McMann, her daughter, Kellie Sue McMann Meredith, her beloved sister Waddie Fertig, and brother-in-law Jack Fertig.

Kay is survived by her sister, Marianne (Bob) Stauffer; children, Gregg (Dee) McMann, Lorie (Bill) Julander; and son-in-law, Doug Meredith. Her grandchildren include Chad (Megan Gissing) McMann, Megan McMann (Paul) Sedillo, Avril Julander (Adrian) Alexander, Stephen Julander, Kaitlind Meredith, and Karl Meredith. Kay has five great-grandchildren, Avin, Aaron, Avery, Amalie and Adrianna Alexander, as well as nieces and nephews, Jane Fertig (Steve) Paternoster, Darris (Susan) Stauffer, Barry (Jana) Stauffer and Robyn (Darrin) Skur; many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Kay graduated from the University of Denver in 1947 and married shortly after. During her life she lived in La Junta, Denver, Cortez and Colorado Springs, CO; Manhattan, KS; Des Moines, IA; San Jose, CA; and Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, NM. After being a homemaker and teacher Kay was an independent businesswoman long before women were seen in that role. She worked with Albuquerque National Bank in the 1960s and in 1970 moved with Robert to California. Kay earned her Realtor license there and began a career that lasted 45 years. She returned to the Albuquerque area in 1987 after Robert's death to be near her children and grandchildren. Beginning the next era of her life as an active, independent widow, she successfully resumed her career in real estate.

Kay was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, always seeking and successfully pursuing active roles in the many places she lived. She was ordained a deacon in the church in 1950, a time when few women were ordained. In 1986 she was ordained as an elder in the church. She was an early member of the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, joining in 1988 shortly after the church was established. She served tirelessly on many church committees until her health failed in 2014.

Kay was active in the PEO sisterhood, Storehouse West, and Republican Women of Sandoval County. She was part of several bridge clubs and served with many charities. She took food and comfort to those who were homebound, visiting countless people over the years.

The family would like to thank Sabrina Castro, respiratory therapist, and Gabriela Sim, hospice nurse, for their compassionate care and kindness over the last six months of Kay's life. The family would especially like to thank the staff and administration at Palmilla Senior Living for their endless patience, care and effort on behalf of our mother. Friends Bill Cox and Linda and Joe Maddux also visited Kay frequently in her last two years of being homebound and provided comfort and support. Marj Austin is appreciated for her generous kindness in transporting Kay to church each week.

Kay McMann impacted many lives and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service for Kay S. McMann will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, 1004 24th Street, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Memorial donations may be made to the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church Building Fund or Storehouse West.
