O'Bryan, Leo Francis Jr.



Leo Francis O'Bryan Jr. 80 passed away on September 15, 2015 with his family by his side. Francis was born in Lake Charles, LA on March 11, 1935 to Leo F O'Bryan, Sr. and Louise Robertson O'Bryan.

Francis graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1953. Francis went on to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's of Science in Geology. While at LSU he was a member of the Sigma Alpha, Epsilon fraternity and the ROTC.

He was later commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the USAF. He graduated flight school in 1963. Francis later went on to serve two tours of duty in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1971. During the war he flew various aircraft in support of the war effort, which included the B-47, C-141 Starlifter in which he logged over 1000 hours, and the EC-47 which he flew in support of the Special Operations Command. During his time in Southeast Asia, flew over 284 missions. The missions included surveillance, reconnaissance, cargo, and personnel delivery support.

Francis served with pride and honor for 11 years in the USAF before being medically retired. Within this period he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in combat operations, and additionally awarded seven Air Medals for various accomplishments and achievements for his outstanding dedication and competence as a pilot. Francis rose to the rank of Major prior to his notification of medical discharge. Whereupon his Air

Force career ended at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, his final assignment was training to fly the RB57F for NASA.

After his medical release form the Air Force, Francis attended McNeese State University, Lake Charles, LA where he attained a Bachelor's of Business degree in Accounting. He moved on to work for the Office of the Inspector General for the IRS, Small Business Administration, and Department of Agriculture for the next 25 years prior to his retirement in 2001.

He both enjoyed and loved living at his ranch house at Tierra Linda Ranch in Kerrville, Texas. For over 25 years Francis further enjoyed his summers in and around the Silverton, Colorado area, where he frequented the town to the extent that he was considered an 'adopted' local amongst the full time residents. He found both peace and solace within the surrounding mountains that he admired and was drawn to. In addition to his trips, he was never without his four legged companions that accompanied him on his many journeys and adventures through the mountains in his Jeep.

Francis is survived by his wife of 58 years Jane Murrey O'Bryan of Kerrville, daughter Genevieve A. Siebert and son-in-law Jeffery Siebert, son Leo F. O'Bryan III all of Boerne, Texas. His brother Dan P. O'Bryan of Albuquerque, NM and his sister Carolyn Sutton of Ruston, LA, cousin Jerald Helms of Bell City, LA, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Francis was a loving husband, proud father who will be missed by all who knew him. He was laid to rest, with full military honors on August 17, 2016 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
